About Us

The Shade Tree is a 24-hour accessible shelter which offers life changing services to victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking, elder abuse, and street violence. Our doors are open to women (with or without children), and unaccompanied youth of any gender facing economic hardship who lack an adequate place to live. Programs and services at The Shade Tree promote stability, dignity, and self-reliance, while escaping the cycle of abuse, homelessness, or violence. The Shade Tree is the largest shelter of its kind in the state and is the only 24-hour accessible shelter designed specifically to meet the needs of women and their children in the region.

Helen Zia is an author, activist, journalist, and has won many awards for her work. Helen Zia founded the Asian American Students Association at her university—Princeton. She spent her career fighting for gender and racial equality, as well as LGBTQIA+ rights. In her career, she was influential in the anti-Asian violence civil rights case of Vincent Chin, for which she was featured in the Netflix documentary Who Killed Vincent Chin? In 2008, Helen Zia was a torchbearer in San Francisco for the Beijing Olympics and in 2010, she was witness to the marriage equality case decided by the Supreme Court. Since 1988, the United States has recognized December 1st as World Aids Day. This year, the theme for this important day of recognition is “Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV”, with the goal of focusing on communities that are disproportionately affected by the current Covid-19 pandemic. HIV/AIDs, Covid-19, and mpox have all affected underserved communities exponentially more. This year, the movement fights to recognize the disparities and create a more equitable world in which we can all receive the same testing and treatment, no matter our age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The only way to know you have HIV/AIDS is to get tested. There are many testing options available through various pharmacies, clinics, and even at home test kits.
